People often want to know how art therapy works - what takes place in the sessions. The answer depends on who the client is, and the intent of the therapy. Sometimes it looks like an art session, and other times, more like traditional therapy. For some, the emphasis on art-work is expressing and creating. For others, the focus is on what the finished art-work brings out.
Creating art-work cuts through our tendency to intellectualize. When we tap into another part of our minds, as we do when we engage in art, we can see attitudes and perceptions we may not have been aware of. Art-work gives us information about our- selves; a valuable tool in therapy.
Art therapy is an accredited mental health discipline. It is practiced in a variety of settings: hospitals, schools, mental-health clinics, and private practice. Art therapy benefits a wide range of people - from the average person, to those with severe mental health issues.
An Art Therapist has a Master's degree in this field, and becomes Registered by completing additional work required by the Art Therapy Credentials Board. Board Certification occurs upon completion of an exam and requires continuing education.
No Need for Art Skills. Anyone can do this work, and do it well.
Really.
